A disqualified motorist has been nabbed by gardaí after being out caught using a cardboard cut-out as an insurance disc.

The audacious driver was spotted turning away from a Garda checkpoint in rural Wexford on Wednesday morning, with gardai assigned to the Road Policing Unit taking off in pursuit.

After putting the vehicle's details through the garda's Automatic Number Plate Recognition system, which uses optical character recognition technology to automatically read vehicle registration plates, it was discovered that the car wasn't insured or taxed, and had no NCT.

When the Ford Ka car was stopped a short time later, members of the Roads Policing Unit were 'alarmed' to discover that not only was the motorist disqualified from driving, but that they had also been using a cardboard cut-out as a fake insurance disc.

The vehicle was subsequently impounded by officers.

Detailing the incident on social media, a garda spokesperson said: "While conducting a morning checkpoint in rural Wexford, Gardaí spotted the driver of this car turning away from them so they went off they took in pursuit.

"They could see from their Automatic Number Plate Recognition system that the car wasn't insured or taxed, and had no NCT.

"We were alarmed that the driver was also disqualified from driving. But a cardboard cut-out as a fake insurance disc was certainly one we don't see too often. This car was seized and proceedings will now follow."

This isn't the first time a motorist has been caught having a false insurance disc on display.

Last month gardai in Cork were alerted to an uninsured Mercedes B-class car thanks to the Mobility app, which quickly scans a vehicle's reg and provides information about tax, insurance, and NCT status.

After pulling over the assailant, the gardaí discovered a crumpled piece of paper vaguely resembling a genuine AXA insurance disc.

Motorists caught driving uninsured and/or with a fake disc are liable to be slapped with a €5,000 fine, up to six months in prison and five penalty points.
