A government operation is currently underway to remove the tents erected on the Grand Canal in Dublin and move asylum seekers who have been staying there to other accommodation.

More than 100 tents have been pitched on a stretch along the canal over the last week, following the last government operation to remove tents pitched on Mount Street before moving people to tented accommodations in Crooksling and Citywest in Dublin.

Barriers were placed around the encampment on the Grand Canal this morning, with access to Warrington Place from Clanwilliam Place closed off as the operation gets underway.

According to a spokesperson for the government, people who had been staying along the Grand Canal would be moved to International Protection Accommodation Service-designated accommodation with food and facilities, although it was not revealed where this was.

It was reported that asylum seekers in both Crooksling and Citywest, who were moved from the tents on Mount Street, were told they would be moved to alternative accommodation today and yesterday, ahead of people in tents on the Grand Canal being moved there.

The operation comes one day after Taoiseach Simon Harris told the Dail: “We will deal with the Grand Canal. Action will be taken”.

The multi-agency operation involved the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth; the Department of Justice; An Garda Síochána; Dublin City Council; Waterways Ireland; and the HSE.

A government spokesperson said in a statement: “The purpose of the operation is to ensure the safe movement of people seeking international protection from the tents on the Grand Canal to International Protection Accommodation Service (IPAS)-designated accommodation.

“The IPAS-designated accommodation has toilets and showers; health services; indoor areas where food is provided; facilities to charge phones and personal devices; access to transport to and from Dublin City Centre; and 24-hour onsite security.”
