Brian Kerr and Damien Delaney give their take on controversial offside call in Real Madrid v Bayern Munich

Brian Kerr and Damien Delaney believe the linesman was too quick to call Noussair Mazraoui offside deep into stoppage time of Real Madrid's clash with Bayern Munich in the semi-final of the Champions League, but both pundits believe Bayern's wastefulness in front of goal is to blame for their defeat.

The incident occurred deep in injury time with Madrid 2-1 up on the night and 4-3 ahead on aggregate. The linesman put his flag up to signal that Noussair Mazraoui was offside after a Joshua Kimmich long-ball and the referee blew the whistle just after Ferland Mendy's defensive header.

Thomas Muller headed the resulting breaking ball to Matthijs de Ligt who volleyed home past Andrey Lunin in the Real Madrid goal. However, replays show that Mazraoui appeared to be onside in the build-up and that the linesman shouldn't have raised his flag nor should the referee have blown the whistle.

Despite Bayern's protests, the goal wasn't given and moments later the final whistle blew to signal the end of the game and the Real Madrid players began celebrating their passage to yet another Champions League final.

"Now it looked like there that it was offside from that position," begins Kerr, "But now you look at it, the ball has been kicked and he doesn't look offside. Why was the linesman so anxious to put the flag up so early?

"The only thing is Lunin has stopped," interjects Delaney, "Would he have got down and saved that? Possibly. But I don't even think Mazraoui made the header anyway. It was helped back across by Mendy.

"The whistle clearly went, but obviously the Real Madrid players have kept going."

While both Kerr and Delaney believe the linesman shouldn't have raised the flag, they were keen to stress that they didn't think this incident was the major talking point of the game and pointed to Bayern's missed chances at 1-0 as the main reason why they aren't going to be in the final against Borussia Dortmund on June 1st.
