Lando Norris' dad has told McLaren his son can be the team's first F1 world champion since Lewis Hamilton next season.

Norris won his first F1 race in Miami last weekend, beating the dominant reigning champion Max Verstappen. And Norris Sr believes he can now challenge Verstappen and Red Bull for the title next season, provided McLaren given him a good enough car.

"I think there's a real opportunity to win more this year," Adam Norris told talkSPORT. "He's had a number of seconds. And next year they have really got to aim for the championship, I think. The team is really doing well."

When asked if Lando had always felt confident he could enjoy success with McLaren, he replied: "Yes, as long as the car is there, is the truth. McLaren have done a massive job. Zak Brown, who came in about five years ago to run McLaren has gradually improved the team, improved the wind tunnel, and improved the equipment they have got there.

"He's been super fast, he was the youngest ever go-kart world champion, before him it was Lewis Hamilton. He's won every championship all the way through and been very quick - but then you need the equipment and the team now is coming through and you're starting to see his real talent.

"He's always been confident he could win and be as fast as anyone in the world just because if you go through his history he won nearly every championship. It's been super natural but super hardworking."

Reflecting on his victory in Miami, Lando was "over the moon" and thanked McLaren for the way they have supported him over the years. “What a race. It's been a long time coming, but finally I've managed to do it," he said.

"I'm so happy for my whole team, I finally delivered for them. A long day, tough race, but finally on top so I'm over the moon. What do I say to them? I'm just proud really. A lot of people doubted me along the way.

"I've made a lot of mistakes over my last five years, my short career, but today we put it all together so this is all for the team. I stuck with McLaren because I could believe in them and I did believe in them. Today proved exactly that."
