Jamie Vardy told to join Wrexham by Man Utd legend in Hollywood transfer move

Jamie Vardy's marvellous career could already be the subject of a Hollywood film, but interest from Wrexham's Hollywood owners may throw up a surprise move for the Leicester star

Jamie Vardy has been urged to join Wrexham to pursue his own ‘Hollywood’ story.

The striker, 37, helped his beloved Leicester City win the Championship and clinch promotion to the Premier League. The Foxes claimed the trophy by a single point despite losing 2-0 to Blackburn on Saturday, with Vardy contributing 18 goals throughout this season.

It marked another huge milestone for the Leicester legend, who was pivotal to their historic Premier League triumph in 2015/16 and FA Cup win in 2021. But Vardy’s future at the Midlands club remains unclear with his contract set to expire at the end of June.

The former England international has openly stated he is not yet looking to retire - and he certainly will not be short of suitors as he returns to the top flight. But Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand thinks Vardy, who famously worked his way up to the top from non-league, should drop down to League One to play for Ryan Reynolds ’ newly-promoted Wrexham.

Speaking on Vibe with FIVE, Ferdinand said: “He’s got to play another season in the Premier League. I want to see him get a couple of goals in the Premier League, it’s nice. The only club I’d like him to go to if he leaves is Wrexham."

That prompted YouTuber Stephen Howson to ask why, to which Ferdinand responded with: “It’s got that Hollywood feel and he’s had a bit of a Hollywood career. Started from the bottom now we’re here, and he wants to reverse that.”

Reports emerged last week of Wrexham eyeing a potential move for the forward. Wrexham director Humphrey Ker told SPORTbible : "There's nothing to say that Jamie Vardy wouldn't be a great Wrexham player. It's not a name I've had mentioned inside the building before but, you know, age and profile wouldn't put us off.”

While the Welsh side will play at a considerably lower level than Leicester next season, celebrity owners Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have consistently signed players well above their station in the past. Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee both joined the Red Dragons’ project while the club were still playing in non-league.

Under the actors’ reign, Wrexham have enjoyed successive promotions from the National League up to the third tier. And the challenge of taking them all the way to the top may well appeal to Vardy as he reaches the twilight of his career.

Before becoming the first Premier League player ever to score in 11 consecutive games, Vardy made his way up from step eight with Stocksbridge Park Steels to Halifax Town in the Conference North. He then played for Fleetwood Town in the Conference Premier before arriving at Leicester in the Championship, where he helped gain promotion in 2014. He has scored 190 goals for the club to date.
