Martin O'Neill is being linked with a shock return to football management abroad.

According to reports, Rapid Bucharest are hoping to entice the Irishman into a comeback to the dugout. O'Neill has not managed since leaving Nottingham Forest in 2019.

He previously spent five years in charge at the Republic of Ireland alongside assistant Roy Keane, leading the Boys in Green to Euro 2016 in France. Last month, he was appointed as chairman of the League of Manager's Association.

According to Fanatik, the 72-year-old is high on their shortlist with their campaign coming to an end and O'Neill could arrive with a pre-season to get his teeth into.

O’Neill won the European Cup twice as a player with Nottingham Forest and was also capped 64 times by Northern Ireland before enjoying a successful managerial career with the likes of Leicester, Celtic, Aston Villa, Sunderland and the Republic of Ireland.

Speaking after being named chairman of the League of Manager's Association, O'Neill said: “I am extremely proud to be voted the new LMA Chair by my fellow managers.

“I am succeeding Howard Wilkinson who has, for over 30 years, overseen the growth of the LMA and served its members with great distinction, dedication and passion.

“The support I have received from the LMA throughout my time as a manager has been hugely important to me and I am delighted to have the opportunity to give something back to the association.

“I very much look forward to working alongside [chief executive] Richard Bevan and the team.

“I would like to build on the work Howard has done so diligently and hopefully continue to support the current and next generation of LMA members.”
