Three motorists who gardaí allege were witnessed filming the scene of a collision on a motorway in Co Louth on their mobile phones have been handed fine.

The collision, which involved a lorry, occurred on the M1 near Dundalk on Tuesday morning and caused two lanes of the motorway to close.

Gardai attached to Clogherhead Garda Station, along with the Dundalk and Drogheda Road Policing Units, were called to the scene.

According to a post shared on an officer An Garda Siochana Facebook page, gardai were 'dealing with this complicated scene' when officers 'witnessed three motorists driving past while recording the scene with their phones'.

The three drivers were pulled over by gardai and issued fixed penalty notices. In a post on Facebook with an image of the scene, Gardai said they were "genuinely lost for words" by the actions of the three motorists.

They also warned drivers to never record the scene of a crash as "using your phone increases the risk of another accident taking place potentially injuring or possibly causing a fatality at a collision".

"Gardai and other emergency services have a job to do and we expect the public to drive appropriately at or near a scene (which most people do)," Gardai said in the Facebook post.

"Not only that it is completely disrespectful to anyone involved in the collision. You have to ask yourself would you like a photo/video of you being uploaded onto social media if something like this happened to you"

Garda can issue motorists caught recording a video of a serious crash on their phones with two penalty points and an €80 fixed charge for “driving without reasonable consideration”. This rises to €120 if not paid within 28 days. If you are convicted in court, you could be fined a higher amount and will get four penalty points.
