Man Utd keep or sell with Sir Jim Ratcliffe ready to ditch all but three players
Manchester United's controlling co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to launch a major overhaul among the playing squad in the summer transfer window, with only three stars safe
Manchester United's season has crashed from bad to worse as they were hammered by Crystal Palace on Monday.
The manner of the dire defeat will only convince new controlling co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe that major surgery is needed on his squad. Ratcliffe has brought in an all-new recruitment team at Old Trafford ahead of the summer transfer window.
And only three players appear to be safe in the eyes of the British billionaire after a miserable season. Erik ten Hag's side sit eighth in the Premier League and have missed out on qualification for the Champions League.
Their dismal performances this campaign means that a huge overhaul is on the horizon, as Ratcliffe bids to reverse United's fortunes. Here, Mirror Football looks at the status of United's first-team squad heading into the summer.
Andre Onana
The Cameroon goalkeeper has attracted fierce criticism since being bought for £47m last summer. Onana has established himself as United's first-choice keeper and is likely to stay at Old Trafford next season, though is not one of the players considered off-limits by Ratcliffe. KEEP
Altay Bayindir
Bayindir has played the role of back-up keeper since his arrival last summer, with his sole appearance coming in the FA Cup win over Newport. Though he may have been frustrated by his lack of chances, other areas of the squad are in more need of attention. KEEP.
Tom Heaton
Veteran keeper Heaton is out of contract at the end of the season, and has previously indicated a desire to get more game time before retiring. While he has been be a useful squad presence, the time is right to part ways. RELEASE
Victor Lindelof
United exercised a one-year extension option in Lindelof's deal earlier this season, though he has endured an injury-disrupted campaign. It's difficult to justify a longer-term extension for the 29-year-old and United should cash in if a suitable offer is made. SELL
Harry Maguire
Maguire had managed to regain his place in Ten Hag's side before picking up an injury that has now ruled him out for the next three weeks. But United are reportedly considering using the defender in an exchange deal for Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite. SELL
Lisandro Martinez
Despite his injury problems, there are no doubts over Martinez's future. The Argentine has been the stand-out from Ten Hag's signings and is now a key player at the heart of defence. He is almost certain to stay. KEEP
Tyrell Malacia
Malacia has spent the entire season on the sidelines having enjoyed a positive debut season at United last term. But with little sign that he will be ready for a return, the Red Devils should accept a suitable bid for him if one is forthcoming this summer. SELL
Raphael Varane
United have already turned down the option in Varane's contract, with the Frenchman heading for the exit. He has struggled to settle at Old Trafford and this summer is the perfect time to part ways, despite the massive loss United will be hit by if he leaves for free. RELEASE
Diogo Dalot
Despite the dreadful season, Dalot has been a rare bright spark. There are still questions over his defensive abilities, but the Portuguese fullback has done enough to earn the chance to return for next season. KEEP
Luke Shaw
Injuries have been a long-running issue with Shaw and a proper back-up is certainly needed, but United are clearly a better side with the Englishman available. He still has plenty to offer and will be a key voice of leadership during this transitional period. KEEP
Aaron Wan-Bissaka
It's clear by now that Wan-Bissaka is not a long-term option at right-back. Though he has shown some improvement this term, the Englishman does have a number of suitors and United should sell if an offer comes in. SELL
Jonny Evans
Veteran defender Evans arrived with little expectations of much game-time. But injuries have seen him play a regular role under Ten Hag and an extension to his one-year would certainly be deserved. KEEP
Brandon WIlliams
Williams helped Ipswich to promotion from the Championship, though barely played during the second-half of the season. The full-back is clearly not ready to play a role for United and it's time for both parties to part. SELL
Willy Kambwala
Young defender Kambwala has impressed after being thrown in at the deep end this season. Regular minutes next term seems unlikely and a loan move to either a Championship or Premier League side would be the best step for his career. LOAN OUT
Alvaro Fernandez Carreras
Fernandez won United's U23 Player of the Year award in 2022, but has been consistently overlooked by Ten Hag. He is currently out on loan at Benfica, who have an option to sign the Spaniard permanently, one United will likely hope is picked up. SELL
Sofyan Amrabat
Despite high expectations after an impressive 2022 World Cup, Amrabat's move to United has been a disaster. Luckily for the Red Devils, the midfielder was only brought in on loan and they can send him back to Fiorentina in the summer. SEND BACK
Mason Mount
Mount has endured an injury-hit debut season, but his time at Chelsea shows there he can be a top player. A full summer to prepare for next year will certainly help him, with no England duty to worry about. KEEP
Bruno Fernandes
Fernandes' qualities as a captain have been called into question this year, but he remains a key player. Without his goals, United may have been looking at an even worse season. It will be an easy decision to keep him. KEEP
Christian Eriksen
At the time, the decision to sign Eriksen made sense following his impressive time at Brentford. But the Dane's drop-off in form has been alarming and United should be able to upgrade in the summer. SELL
Casemiro
Casemiro's fall from grace has been alarming, with the hammering at Crystal Palace his latest poor performance. Jamie Carragher has even urged the Brazilian to step back from top-level football and he should receive interest from the MLS and Saudi Arabia. SELL
Donny van de Beek
One of the easiest decisions to make is to sell Van de Beek, with the midfielder clearly having no way back at United. The Red Devils may have to be satisfied with a cut-price fee though, with his contract having just a year to run and his spell at Frankfurt having been underwhelming. SELL
Scott McTominay
McTominay has proven to be a solid player under Ten Hag, though has struggled for starts under the Dutchman. United may have to sell him if the Scot wants to move on, but they should do all they can to keep him at the club. KEEP
Kobbie Mainoo
One of the three players on Ratcliffe's safe list, there's no question Mainoo will be a United player next season. His rise to become a key player under Ten Hag has been impressive and he will be a central part of United's midfield for some years to come. KEEP
Dan Gore
Youngster Gore made his Premier League debut before the turn of the year, before being loaned to Port Vale. His time in League One has been disrupted by injury, though, and he will likely need another season out on loan gaining experience. LOAN OUT
Hannibal
While he remains somewhat of a fan favourite, Hannibal's time on loan at Sevilla has been a disaster. The midfielder has done little to show he can succeed at the top level and a sale this summer may be for the best. SELL
Facundo Pellistri
Pellistri has failed to live up to the high expectations that greeted his arrival and he would appear to have no future at United. If the Red Devils can cash in this summer, they should do so. SELL
Omari Forson
Forson has mostly impressed in his limited game time this season. The youngster still appears to be a raw talent though and a loan move could be the best option for the teenager this summer. LOAN OUT
Jadon Sancho
The relationship beween Sancho and Ten Hag appears to be broken following their fall-out after the defeat to Arsenal in September. The winger has impressed in his loan move to Borussia Dortmund and making that deal permanent appears to be the best course of action. SELL
Alejandro Garnacho
Alongside Mainoo, Garnacho is also considered off-limits by Ratcliffe. The winger has been impressive form this season and no-one will be surprised to hear he will be staying at United. KEEP
Antony
Arguably the biggest flop in Premier League history, Antony has shown more of a penchant for winding people up than he has actually contributing to United's success. If United can cut ties, they should do so as soon as possible. SELL
Amad
Amad has struggled for chances this season, though given his team-mates' dreadful performances more game-time should be forthcoming next term. United should hold off on selling him for at least another year to see if the attacker can make a breakthrough. KEEP
Shola Shoretire
Young forward Shoretire is not so young these days, and he's no closer to adding to his five senior outings. Time appears to be up for the academy graduate. SELL
Mason Greenwood
United previously indicated Greenwood had no future at Old Trafford, though Sir Jim Ratcliffe has appeared to row back on that stance. But with Getafe keen on keeping the 22-year-old, the decision to sell should be an easy one. SELL
Anthony Martial
United opted against triggering an extension in Martial's deal earlier this season and the Frenchman is on his way out of Old Trafford. RELEASE
Marcus Rashford
There have been reports linking Rashford with a move to PSG following what has been a disappointing campaign. Rashford is not on Ratcliffe's off-limits list and a suitable offer could see him move on. SELL
Rasmus Hojlund
Though he struggled at first, Hojlund appears set for a long stay at United. He is the final player on Ratcliffe's list of off-limits stars, though United could do with adding an experienced back-up. KEEP
