A man has been arrested by gardaí on suspicion of public order offences during an incident in Aughrim, Co. Wicklow earlier this week.

The incident occurred on Monday April 29 when a large crowd asked a group of builders carrying out work at a vacant hotel in the village to down their tools and leave the site.

However, one of the men in the crowd begins to shout at the workers telling them to "get out with your f***ing crew, get the f**k out in the van, get out". The crowd react to this by shouting "out, out, out".

The man also appears to issue the builders with an ultimatum, telling them "I am giving you an hour to get the f**k out or I'll pack your f**king tools up".

Although the protestors had gathered outside the vacant Lawless Hotel over concerns the site was earmarked for refugees, the owners issued statement denying this.

Video footage was widely circulated across social media following the tense altercation.

As part of a criminal investigation into the circumstances of the incident, a man in his 30s was arrested under the Criminal Justice Public Order Act, 1994, this morning, Thursday, May 2, 2024. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda Station in County Wicklow.

A garda spokesperson added that investigations into this incident are ongoing.

This is the latest arrest in a string of unconnected protests against housing asylum seekers in communities. Just last Friday, three men and a woman appeared in court charged in connection with a “large scale public order incident” that unfolded outside a site earmarked to accommodate international protection applicants.

The site at River Lodge in Wicklow, which was the subject of an arson attack a number of weeks ago, has been the scene of multiple anti-refugee protests over the last few months since it emerged the site could potentially be used to house dozens of international protection applicants.
