Matt Doherty is ready to rock the Premier League title race by completing a rare Premier League double over Manchester City.

Wolves have inflicted one of just three defeats on Pep Guardiola’s men this season. They won in late-September, courtesy of a Ruben Dias own goal and a Hwang Hee-chan winner.

And Ireland defender Doherty is hopeful of another upset when the two sides clash at the Etihad on Saturday.

“We’ve got a whole week to prepare for City,” he said. “We’ve beaten them already this season, so it’s a game we want to be competitive in and cause a bit of a shock at the top of the league.”

On their recent form, few would fancy Wolves to come anywhere close to a win against City, but they did make a timely return to winning ways last weekend.

Their 2-1 win over Luton was their first victory since March 9 when they beat Fulham by the same scoreline.

Since then, they were dumped out of the FA Cup by Coventry, were beaten in the league by Aston Villa, West Ham, Arsenal and Bournemouth, and drew with Burnley and Nottingham Forest.

Currently 11th in the table, with three games remaining and two points between them and 10th placed Bournemouth, Wolves remain hopeful of a top-half finish.

“It was massive for us,” said Doherty of the Luton win. “No win in seven and we still have aspirations to finish in the top ten, so we knew with two home games and two away games left, we knew the home games were vitally important.

“We made it a bit close for comfort at the end, more than we needed to, but it was a good win.

“At home, you want to score goals in front of your fans. You want them to go home happy and give them a good weekend, so all next week they’ll feel good about the team going into the City game.

“The win doesn’t only affect the changing room, it affects the city and the fans, so it’s going to be a good week.”

He added that every effort would be made to avoid another slip in standards between now and the season finale.

“It wouldn’t be allowed. The results haven’t been going for us, but we’re still pushing hard to win the games every time,” said the Dubliner.

“We’re not on holiday mode or anything like that, there’s plenty for us to play for, personally and as a club. It’s nice to go into the week with a win.”
