Drogheda United have failed in their appeal to overturn Jack Keaney’s sending off in last night’s 4-0 defeat to Shamrock Rovers.

And it means the centre-back must serve a one-game suspension in this Friday’s clash against St Patrick’s Athletic at Richmond Park.

There has yet to be a red card rescinded since the FAI introduced the appeals process at the start of this season.

Keaney was sent off by referee Rob Hennessy in the 72nd minute at Tallaght Stadium, after appearing to trip Shamrock Rovers striker Johnny Kenny.

Kenny was racing towards the penalty area and hit the deck just on the edge of the box, although replays showed that contact was minimal.

After the game, Drogheda boss Kevin Doherty said this case would be a real “test for the appeals process.”

Doherty said at the time: “It’s not a foul. It’s awful. I spoke to the referee afterwards and he told me it’s a clear foul. Not what I saw it wasn’t.

“I have to look at it properly, but I’d be very disappointed in that decision,” he said.

But while Drogheda submitted the appeal - at a cost of €500 - before today’s lunchtime deadline, they have not received the outcome they hoped for.

An FAI statement read: “An Independent Appeal Committee of the FAI has rejected Drogheda United’s FC’s appeal for wrongful dismissal following Jack Keaney’s red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity in Drogheda United FC’s SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division fixture versus Shamrock Rovers FC on 29 April 2024.

“In accordance with the FAI Disciplinary Regulations, Jack Keaney will serve a one-match suspension.”
