A “clear death threat” to People Before Profit’s Paul Murphy has been condemned after graffiti reading “Paul Murphy RIP” was scrawled on a wall near his home.

Mr Murphy, a TD for Dublin South-West, said he contacted the Gardaí about this and previous incidents.

He tweeted a picture of graffiti written on a wall a “five-minute walk from his house”, that read “Paul Murphy RIP”.

He previously contacted Gardaí following protests outside the home he shares with his wife and young child.

Speaking in Leinster House on Tuesday, Deputy Murphy said he will “not be intimidated” by these sorts of incidents.

“There’s clearly an attempt by far-right actors to intimidate people, to threaten people, to discourage people from engaging in politics and, I think, to discourage people from calling out what they're engaged in,” he said.

“I think those of us who have been particularly targeted are the ones who are most vocal about the lies that they're spreading, about the hate that they're spreading, about their true agenda, about the fact that these people have never done anything positive for their communities.

“They’ve never fought for housing for people, be they Irish or non-Irish. They’ve never fought for investment in local facilities. They weren't involved in fighting on the cost-of-living crisis. This is a serious attempt to intimidate people.

“My response, our response, has to be to refuse to be intimidated. Not to allow them to win.”

Mr Murphy’s People Before Profit colleague Brid Smith labelled the graffiti a “clear death threat”.

Ms Smith also said there has been an “escalation” in the level of abuse aimed at politicians.

As reported by the Irish Mirror, a third bomb threat was made against Justice Minister Helen McEntee over the weekend. Last week, her husband and two young children had to be evacuated from their home following a separate threat.

A video shared widely online in recent days also showed homophobic abuse being shouted at former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar outside a coffee shop.
