Firefighters in Cork recovered a dead body from a burning car on Monday in what Gardaí are describing as a "personal tragedy".

Firefighters from the Cork City and Mallow Fire Brigades rushed to Whitechurch, north of the city, just after 2pm following reports of a car ablaze, reports Cork Beo.

In the process of extinguishing the flames, the firefighters noticed a body sitting within the vehicle which they immediately reported to Gardaí.

The emergency services, along with Gardaí, were quick to arrive on the scene. After the fire was extinguished, the person in the car was pronounced deceased at the scene.

In the aftermath of the harrowing event, the road was shut down, with a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána announcing that the area would be inaccessible for a time in order to facilitate a thorough investigation.

Cork City Fire Brigade's Victor Shine said in a statement: "We were called out to a single vehicle incident at 2:25 this afternoon. The call came in reporting a vehicle fire near Whitechurch. Both the Cork City Fire Brigade and units from the Mallow Fire Station responded."

A Garda spokesperson told the Irish Mirror that the discovery is being treated as a "personal tragedy" at this stage, and that no foul play is currently suspected.
