Dubliner Denis Frimpong plans on cooking up a tasty performance against Callum Mullen
Frimpong's MMA career is only young but is hoping to put on a show on Saturday night.
Dublin fighter Denis Frimpong is hoping to cook up a tasty performance when he returns to the octagon on Saturday, describing himself as a ‘chicken teriyaki’ fighter.
Frimpong takes on Callum Mullen as part of Oktagon MMA’s latest card but says he is expecting a plain performance from his English opponent.
“He's just very basic, to be honest,” Frimpong tells the Irish Mirror. “He is a very patterned fighter. He does the basics well but doesn't bring any flavor to it. He's like a salt and pepper fighter, whereas I am a chicken teriyaki fighter or a sweet and sour fighter.”
Frimpong (29) only started his MMA journey during the Covid pandemic, having previously started Jiu Jitsu at the age of 22, and said that he is making huge strides in his professional career.
“I'm making exponential gains every camp. I don't have any in-between camps; I've been back-to-back, and I like to stay active. Since I am learning on the job and the best way to gain experience is to get in there and get cage time, in the short amount of time I've been doing MMA, I've had over two hours in the cage, so I'm learning exponentially rather than incrementally.
“There will be a point where it becomes a bit more incremental, but I haven't hit that point yet, and I'm still in my newbie phase of learning, so there is so much for me to learn, and that is just a testament to my work ethic, my physical prowess, and my talent.”
Englishman Mullen is more experienced, with a professional record of 6-2-0, and the pair met in a tense face-to-face, but Frimpong admits it is nothing but respect for his opponent.
“I respect anyone who signs a contract to fight me. There were a lot of guys that didn't sign to fight me, so I'll give him the respect that he decided to take the fight.
“There is never animosity on my part, even with previous opponents I might have gone a bit deeper or a bit more personal with the trash talk, but it's never personal animosity from me; it's just the person across from me is trying to take my dream away from me.
“They are in the way of my dreams, so they are just an obstacle I have to get over, so if I can say something to trigger them a little bit, it might throw them off their game; it might trigger them emotionally, and an emotional fighter is not a precise fighter.”
And the Dubliner said his secret to winning is to just go in there and enjoy himself.
“The game plan is to go in there and have fun. Whenever I go in there and have fun, I do my best. I go in there and express my art the best and just go in there and do my thing.
“I'm not too worried about what he is going to do. I've already put the strategies in place in the muscle memory in camp to deal with what he's bringing, and the game plan is to go in there and put on a spectacular performance, knock him out, and get that fight bonus.”
