Regular border controls at almost 40 border crossings with Hungary and Bulgaria in Romania will be abolished from January 1, when the country becomes a full member of the Schengen area, announced the Romanian border police.
At the Hungarian-Romanian border, 12 road and 5 rail border crossing points, while at the Bulgarian-Romanian border, regular checks on documents of passengers crossing the border will be lifted at 11 road, 3 rail and 8 port crossing points, regardless of nationality or vehicle. From now on, travelling from Romania to another Schengen member state will be possible under practically the same conditions as if people were travelling domestically.
However, passengers preparing to cross the border must be in possession of a valid travel document (passport or identity card). The Romanian border police will continue to carry out random checks along the 30-kilometer perimeter of the state border.
According to the border police, Romania is logistically and human resources-wise prepared to adequately protect the external borders of the European Union and the Schengen area, including by deploying 90 percent of the graduates of the border police training center in Oradea (Nagyvárad) to the external border sections.
An average of 110,000 passengers crossed Romania’s border crossings every day this year in 33,000 vehicles, including 7,300 lorries. At the Hungarian-Romanian border, the Csanádpalota-Nagylak II motorway crossing had the highest traffic, with an average of 9,500 passengers and 4,870 vehicles checked. On the Bulgarian-Romanian border, the highest traffic was at the Danube bridge between Giurgiu and Ruse, where 10,500 passengers crossed daily in 5,000 vehicles.
