The Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Liberal Party (PNL), and the Hungarian minority party RMDSZ (Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania) reached an agreement on the new government structure, with RMDSZ assuming leadership of two key ministries: the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Development.

According to Krónika, the new coalition government, set to be inaugurated soon, aims to stabilize Romania’s financial situation and implement strategic reforms.

For the first time, Romania will have a Hungarian Finance Minister, Barna Tánczos, who will also serve as Deputy Prime Minister.

Mr. Tánczos’ appointment is significant as the Finance Minister is a member of the Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT), a body responsible for national security, a position RMDSZ has never held before.  The politician, previously the Minister of Environment, will now tackle Romania’s complex financial challenges.

In difficult times, in a difficult political-financial-budgetary situation, we assume the responsibility of governing and we want to do a job of government that will put the country’s budget in order,” said Hunor Kelemen, president of the RMDSZ.

Attila Cseke will also return as the head of the Ministry of Development, a position he previously held until June 2023.

The new government will consist of 16 ministries. PSD will control eight ministries, PNL will hold six, and RMDSZ will lead two. The PSD’s control includes ministries such as defense, health, and transport, while the PNL will manage education, foreign affairs, and energy.

Mr. Kelemen emphasized that RMDSZ would ensure financial stability without burdening citizens, focusing on economic predictability.

we will continue to implement programs that support families and young people,” he added.

The coalition’s priorities include financial stability, avoiding additional taxes on citizens, supporting public investments, and fostering a favorable environment for entrepreneurs. With these new ministerial appointments and clear priorities, the coalition aims to navigate Romania’s challenges effectively.
