Population Decline: Deaths Sur

According to the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), 6,196 children were born, and 10,267 people died in November 2024, reflecting a continued demographic decline. Births dropped 8.4%, while deaths fell by 4.7% compared to November 2023.

In November 2024, births were 569 fewer than the same month in 2023, and the total fertility rate dropped to 1.38 from 1.52 the previous year. Over January-November 2024, 71,094 children were born, marking a 9.6% decrease. As we earlier reported, Hungary’s birth rate struggles have been a growing concern in public discourse, with EU efforts emphasizing demographic challenges.

Despite fewer deaths in November 2024, the natural decrease grew to 4,071 from 4,005 in November 2023.

Between January and November 2024, 115,176 people died, down 0.3%, while the natural population decline rose by 19% year-on-year, reaching 44,082.

Marriages also fell significantly, with 2,724 couples marrying in November, 12% fewer than the previous year. For January-November, marriages decreased by 6.2% to 44,550, driven by sharp drops in summer and autumn months.

From December 2023 to November 2024, 77,703 children were born (9.7% fewer), 127,835 people died (0.2% fewer), and 47,216 couples married (6.1% fewer). This sustained trend highlights the need for demographic policies to counterbalance population decline.
