Tibor Navracsics, Minister of Public Administration and Regional Development, emphasized that cohesion policy can significantly address the EU’s demographic and competitiveness challenges. Speaking ahead of the EU Council meeting on cohesion, he highlighted the importance of reducing regional disparities and adopting sustainable solutions.

Minister Navracsics underlined the vital role of cohesion policy in tackling pressing EU challenges. “The link between cohesion, competitiveness, and demographic trends is essential,” he stated. He argued that addressing social and territorial disparities reduces resources needed for regional catch-up, enabling greater investment in competitiveness. He proposed long-term solutions such as family policies, infrastructure development, and education system improvements, rejecting immigration as a viable remedy.

Immigration, whether legal or illegal, cannot solve these problems,” he said, stressing the need for tailored regional approaches.

The demographic crisis, including aging populations, rural depopulation, and brain drain from southern and eastern EU regions to central ones, was identified as a critical issue. The politician noted that reversing these trends is essential to maintaining competitiveness and cohesion in the EU.

Hungary’s EU Presidency focused on cohesion-related challenges, relying on three key documents, including the European Commission’s ninth cohesion report. Tibor Navracsics highlighted Hungary’s experience with successful policies, such as its family policy, as examples that could benefit other member states.

We are ready to share our proven solutions to help lagging regions across the EU,” he said.

Minister Navracsics emphasized the need for collaboration among member states to craft policies that address disparities and secure a competitive, cohesive future for the EU. Hungary’s leadership during its presidency aims to offer effective, sustainable solutions to these challenges.
