The State Secretariat for Public Education has initiated consultations regarding a teacher salary increase for 2025, highlighting the necessity of valuing educators within the system.

In 2024, the Government implemented a historic salary increase of 32.2% on average, raising teachers’ salaries to approximately HUF 693,000 (EUR 1,855) gross, which constitutes 72.2% of the average salary for graduates.

As Hungary Today reported in December 2023, the forthcoming pay rise is a response to years of dissatisfaction among teachers regarding their salaries. This increase aims not only to enhance compensation but also to improve the overall education system, which has faced criticism for undervaluing the teaching profession. Furthermore, as we detailed in May 2024, newly arrived EU funds will play a significant role in contributing to these salary increases, alleviating financial challenges within the education sector.

The target for the next salary rise is to reach 80% of the average graduate salary by 2025, necessitating an additional 20-21% increase in teachers’ pay.

The government will provide 88% of the funding, with the EU covering the remaining 12%.

These consultations and the government’s commitment to raising salaries reflect a positive shift in recognizing the value of teachers. With EU support and a clear objective for future salary adjustments, Hungary aims to foster a more robust educational environment, ultimately benefiting both teachers and students alike, as the system continues to evolve.
