During the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Minister of Agriculture István Nagy emphasized the presidency’s commitment to fostering a competitive and sustainable agricultural sector.
Minister Nagy’s statement highlighted that both agriculture and forestry are integral to creating quality living spaces and achieving the EU’s climate protection targets.
Hungary’s agricultural goals focus on creating a sector that is crisis-resistant, farmer-friendly, and knowledge-based.
The Minister stressed that this approach is essential for addressing the pressing challenges of pollution and biodiversity loss. Alongside agricultural development, the government aims to implement various environmental initiatives to ensure a healthier ecosystem.
A significant aspect of Hungary’s presidency is its emphasis on biodiversity.
The country will participate in international events, including the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, aiming to establish a unified EU position. Additionally, discussions will include the implementation of the EU chemicals strategy, which is crucial for safeguarding both public health and the environment.
Furthermore, preparations are underway for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Azerbaijan, where the focus will be on climate change mitigation and the development of a legally binding international instrument on plastic pollution.
Hungary’s EU presidency is marked by a clear commitment to sustainability, environmental protection, and agricultural resilience. By prioritizing these issues, Hungary aims to play a significant role in shaping the future of the EU’s environmental and agricultural policies, fostering a healthier planet for generations to come.
