BYD, the world’s leading manufacturer of new electric vehicles (NEVs), building a giant plant in Szeged and also includes plug-in hybrid vehicles in addition to electric ones, has reached a major milestone in Hungary: the Chinese company became the market leader in the pure electric vehicle (BEV, battery electric vehicle) segment in July, August and September.

The Asian company highlighted that it sold more than 1,000 BEVs between January and September 2024 and has been the number one in the competition among pure electric brands for the third consecutive month, reports Világgazdaság.

In September, BYD achieved a 22.7 percent market share of BEV passenger car sales in Hungary, with 176 new vehicle registrations.

Of the four electric models available in Hungary so far, the Atto 3 and the Seal are proving to be the best-selling models, with 369 and 265 units sold, respectively, followed closely by the Dolphin. The Seal U, a D-segment SUV launched in the first quarter, is also showing promise. For the latter, planned deliveries in the coming weeks are expected to further boost sales figures in the statistics.

BYD’s stated goal is to build a nationwide dealer network in our country, and to this end it is actively working to open new service and sales outlets, primarily to directly reach potential rural customers.

The remainder of the year promises to be particularly busy for the Chinese manufacturer, with

plans to launch three new models in the country.

One of these is the Seal U DM-i. This plug-in hybrid SUV could be an ideal choice for those looking for an electric car that can run on electricity while also offering a long range.

As reported by Világgazdaság, what is really striking is the dynamic advance of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) within the corporate portfolio. In September, 252,647 hybrids were sold, a robust 86.2 percent year-on-year growth, compared to 13.6 percent in August. BYD stopped making EVs in March 2022 and has since only assembled BEVs and PHEVs.

BYD Auto, founded in 2003, is the world’s first car manufacturer to stop producing fossil-fueled vehicles during the electric transition and has led the sales of plug-in passenger vehicles, new energy vehicles (NEVs) in China for 9 consecutive years. China’s BYD announced a multi-billion euro investment in December 2023 to set up its first European car plant in Szeged, southern Hungary.
