Minister of Agriculture, István Nagy addressed the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, noting that while the western part of Hungary faced floods, the eastern region was experiencing drought. He highlighted the need for comprehensive solutions to manage these challenges.

The politician emphasized the importance of water management, proposing infrastructure improvements to capture floodwaters in reservoirs and enhance soil conditions to maximize water retention. He also stressed the need for collaboration within the European Union to develop the necessary resources and mechanisms to deal with natural disasters and crises, calling for faster financial aid distribution.

We need to think together and share good practices to overcome these difficulties,” Nagy stated, urging collective action.

He further highlighted the potential of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), offering significant opportunities for farmers through support for competitiveness, sustainability, and generational renewal. However, he acknowledged the heavy administrative burden associated with CAP, which delays the use of its instruments and payments.

István Nagy pointed out the need to balance societal expectations with sustainability goals and the core functions of CAP. In light of geopolitical changes, he stressed that income support for farmers alone is insufficient, advocating for more flexible risk and crisis management tools.

“It is no coincidence that the Hungarian EU Presidency is focusing on a farmer-centered agricultural policy,” the Minister said, underscoring Hungary’s commitment to agricultural policy reform.
