Paris Paralympics 2024: Medal

As Hungary Today reported, defending her title, Luca Ekler won the gold medal in the long jump T38, while table tennis player Péter Pálos finished third in the MS11 classification at the Paris Paralympic Games on Thursday. The Hungarian successes did not end, however, as our athletes added more medals to the Paralympic team’s collection in the evening.

Swimmer Zsófia Konkoly won the 200m medley, the third gold medal of the Hungarian team. The 22-year-old swimmer, who competes in the S9 classification, also secured the team’s first gold medal, winning the 400m freestyle in Paris a week ago. Speaking after her victory last night, she said last week’s win in the 400m freestyle had been a liberating experience. She had not expected to win the 400m freestyle gold medal and she felt she was not going home empty-handed, which was a relief, the swimmer explained.

I woke up on the day of the 400 freestyle wishing I could stand on the podium, but today I woke up wishing I had the gold medal. Obviously it was different this time, but I was nervous all day. Now I am very relieved and happy,”

she said.

Today, Zsófia Konkly will dive into the 100 butterfly at La Défense Arena, the event in which she is the defending champion.

Swimmer Bianka Papp also took to the podium after Thursday evening’s final, winning bronze in the 400m freestyle in the S10 classification. The 24-year-old won the 400m freestyle silver medal at the Tokyo Games, but has since won the world championships in this event, and qualified for yesterday’s final with the third best time. The swimmer revealed that she has been working a lot with her psychologist in the last few days, starting from the bottom but feeling she is getting higher.

I am a little relieved that I am not going home without a medal. Tomorrow I have my main event, the 100m backstroke, in which I am the defending champion, but it will definitely not be as easy as it was in Tokyo, it will be a much closer race. With that said, I am looking forward to it. So now I am going into it with a bit more momentum,”

she said after the 400m freestyle final.

The Hungarian women’s wheelchair foil fencing team of Éva Hajmási, Boglárka Madarászné Mező, Zsuzsanna Krajnyák and Amarilla Veres won the silver medal at the Paralympic Games in Paris on Thursday. The teams must include at least one category B fencer, i.e. a fencer with a serious injury, which was Boglárka Mező in the Hungarian squad. In the evening final the team faced the favorites China. The Asian line-up included the gold medalist in category A, Cou Hsi-feng, and second Ku Haj-jan, and silver medalist in category B, Xiao Zsung. Although the Hungarian team fought well, the opposing team showed from the start that they were stronger.

In the end, the Chinese won 45-34, but the Hungarian team deserves all praise for their excellent performance throughout the day and for moving up one place from their Tokyo result.

Krajnyák, competing for the seventh time, won the 13th Paralympic medal of her career. “It is hard to find the words at the moment, I am still in a turmoil of emotions. The best moment of the day was when we made it to the final. We lost in Tokyo and then we agreed that we wanted to play the final in Paris. We were really prepared for this, all four of us fought our hearts out today,” she said.

The foil team won the eighth medal and the second silver of the Hungarian delegation in Paris, the overall tally now stands at three gold, two silver and three bronze. The Paralympic Games run until Sunday.
