Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ferenc Krausz received the Hungarian Order of Saint Stephen from President Tamás Sulyok on Tuesday at the Sándor Palace on the occasion of the August 20 national holiday.

At the award ceremony, Tamás Sulyok stressed that “we are all proud of Ferenc Krausz in Hungary,” and that the Nobel Prize in Physics is proof of the results of his many years of research. The President noted: “Ferenc Krausz and his colleagues have given mankind new tools with which the movements and energy changes of the electrons that make up atoms can be studied, opening up infinite horizons. The ray of light that Ferenc Krausz shines reveals a hitherto unknown dimension.

The discovery could save lives in medicine, renew many theorems in physics and chemistry, make other researchers rethink theories and set the world in motion.”

He added that all this could have happened because of the perseverance and genius of someone who kept pace with international science and then, at a certain point, broke through and created something unique.

Fact

The Hungarian Order of Saint Stephen is the highest state honor since 2011. It is awarded by the President every year since 2013 on the national holiday of August 20. It is intended to recognize the most special merits, outstanding lifetime achievements and significant international achievements in the service of Hungary.

“His success is a world success, and it lifts us Hungarians up, too,” Tamás Sulyok pointed out. He recalled that there are many Hungarians who have been lifted up by their knowledge, talent and diligence, who have managed to overcome obstacles. Their creations and inventions made them important for our country and for many others, but only a few of them could reach the highest heights.

They are the ones who conquered the world in science, who took humanity forward, who brought glory to the Hungarian name. Our honoree today is such a man,”

he said, adding that thanks to his achievements, we have moved forward on issues that shape the destiny of humanity. The President praised the physicist for his love for his country, for remaining Hungarian abroad, for helping future Hungarian researchers and scientists, and for his responsibility for Hungarian science.

At the award ceremony, Ferenc Krausz thanked the Prime Minister and the Hungarian government for the trust and continuous support, thanks to which he has managed to build a team in Hungary that is unrivalled in the world.

Ferenc Krausz emphasized that

the team’s aim is to lay the foundations for the preventive medicine of the future, so that they can create a much more effective health care system not only in Hungary but also, they hope, in the whole world.

The event was also attended by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, former head of state János Áder and his spouse, Interior Minister Sándor Pintér and László Kövér, Speaker of the National Assembly.
