In view of the ongoing war against Ukraine, the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council adopted its fourteenth sanctions package, granting the Paks expansion a full and general exemption from punitive measures. From now on, the measures taken by the EU will no longer affect supplies to the Paks II project, and companies involved in the project will not have to seek permission from their own member state authorities.

Gergely Jákli, CEO of Paks II reacted to the new package of sanctions adopted by the European Union, saying that through persistent work and long negotiations, the EU’s measures against Russia no longer have any impact on the Paks II project, reports Világgazdaság. The CEO explained that in the text of the newly adopted regulation, the project has received a separate paragraph. While previously the project was mentioned as an exception for a specific measure in the EU sanctions, now

now it is stated in a separate paragraph that the sanctions have no impact on it and do not affect the Paks expansion.

“This is an important step forward, clearly showing all potential European suppliers that the measures taken by the EU will not affect the supply of a particular product or service to the Paks II project,” the company’s CEO stressed. He added that “this is especially true for Hungarian companies,

as it is very important that as much Hungarian expertise and knowledge as possible is integrated in the 2,400 megawatt nuclear power plant that is being built.”

Furthermore, Gergely Jákli also pointed out: “Another aspect of the changes is that in the case of certain products and services, it was previously necessary to request an exemption from the competent authority of the country concerned before supplying them.”

In the case of Paks II, this process will now be practically eliminated, and it will be sufficient to simply inform the competent authority.

“This will allow companies from the European Union to focus on what is important for a nuclear supplier: the production of the product and its quality assurance. This is like an exclamation point for the business community that the investment is waiting for all EU suppliers with capacity and competence,” the CEO concluded.
