Data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) show that, as in March, last month the number of new pure electric cars registered in Hungary increased by around 80 percent compared to the same month last year.

Apart from Cyprus and Malta, which have relatively low numbers, only Denmark was ahead of Hungary in April. The average increase in Hungary is more than five times higher than the EU average, the Ministry of Energy announced in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

Similarly, Hungary’s 46.5 percent growth rate for the first five months of the year ranks fourth. In addition to the Mediterranean island countries, Belgium also made it onto the imaginary podium.

Domestic growth in January-April is more than seven times higher than the European average.

Hungary is leading the way in the production and storage of green energy in homes, factories and cars, writes the social media post. Domestic demand for clean and quiet vehicles will be boosted by a support scheme for companies opened in February. To date, nearly 3,000 companies have applied for a total of HUF 13.6 billion (EUR 35 million) out of the HUF 30 billion (EUR 77.4 million) available for the purchase of 3,520 cars.

The ministry stressed that e-cars can be used without air pollution, are quieter than internal combustion engines and can save owners on operational and maintenance costs. The subsidy option will offset the price advantage of conventional cars, thus contributing to greening transport and to the further take-up of electromobility.

Domestic registration data reflecting the evolution of the number of environmentally friendly vehicles show that

the number of pure electric vehicles in Hungary has more than doubled compared to the beginning of 2020.

The last three months have seen an all-time high in the expansion of the green vehicles. The first for all-electric vehicles was March 2024, the only monthly increase of over 2,000 units to date (2,108). February saw the second highest increase of 1,704 cars, and April is this year’s bronze medalist with 1,687 vehicles, the Ministry of Energy said on its Facebook page.
