He noted that Kythera is situated at the confluence of the Ionian, Aegean and Cretan Seas, emphasizing its strategic importance not only for Greece but for the Eastern Mediterranean as a whole. "Control of the broader maritime area and the passages here largely ensures control of the Eastern Mediterranean," he added. Along with the Chief of Defence General Dimitrios Choupis he is visiting smaller islands to underscore the Hellenic Republic's commitment to maintaining an active presence in these areas. "These islands are a key element in securing our sovereignty and sovereign rights," Dendias stated. He also highlighted his aim to not only maintain a strong and vibrant Greek population but also, in accordance with international law and the law of the sea, to ensure Greece's sovereignty and sovereign rights.
