Record Amputations and Arrests marr Easter celebrations
Record Amputations and Arrests

Greek authorities reported a total of 13 amputations and 102 arrests nationwide due to the misuse of firecrackers and flares during Easter celebrations. The jarring figures come despite intensive checks undertaken by Greek police to avoid such tragedies routinely reported during the holiday.

The most severe cases included a 14-year-old boy in Chania, Crete, who suffered the amputation of three fingers, and a 35-year-old man in Fourni who lost a finger. In Athens alone, five serious injuries were recorded in the last 24 hours leading up to Easter Sunday.

A case has been filed against the mother of the 14-year-old boy for neglecting the supervision of a minor.

Police efforts to curb the illegal use of pyrotechnics led to the seizure of over 180,000 firecrackers and flares and the arrest of individuals on charges ranging from the manufacture and possession of explosive materials to violations of pyrotechnics legislation.

Among the arrested, a 49-year-old man was apprehended in Agioi Anargyroi Square with two launchers and 16 firecrackers in his possession.

These incidents have cast a shadow over the festive season, highlighting the dangers of unregulated use of fireworks and the importance of public safety measures.
