Deputy Culture Minister Christos Dimas and National Defense Minister Nikos Dendias attended events for the 200th anniversary of Lord Byron's death in Missolonghi in London on Saturday.

The two ministers laid a wreath on behalf of the Greek government at Cambridge University's Trinity College, where the Center of Hellenic Studies organized an event.

Dimas spoke of the work and life of Byron, his love of Greece, and his contribution to the Greek Revolution as well as to the wave of philhellenism it engendered. He also spoke of the return of the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece, noting that it was Lord Byron who first raised the issue and publicly criticized Lord Elgin for removing them.

Missolonghi

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni attended commemorative events in Missolonghi. She inaugurated the exhibition "Byron and Greece", organized by the Byronic Society of the Sacred city of Missolonghi and the National Historical Museum, and laid a wreath at the memorial in his honor, a statement said. Mendoni also announced that Greece had declared 2024 Lord Byron Year.
