Finland on Monday proposed an Agenda for Action with more than 20 proposals for measures on business and human rights.

Minister of Employment Timo Harakka published the statement at the Business and Human Rights conference held in Brussels, said an official press release.

“Interest in greater corporate social responsibility is growing among citizens, organisations, policy-makers and businesses. The EU, too, needs a more coherent and strategic direction. That is why we propose an EU agenda for action on business and human rights,” said Harakka in his closing address.

The conference statement was drawn up by Finland based on discussions at the conference.

Among the topics covered in the statement are public funding, reviewing and developing of legislation and judicial remedies, improving the effect of the trade and sustainable development chapters in free trade agreements, and strengthening cooperation in countries with weak governance.

The aim of the conference, organised by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs as part of Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, was to raise business and human rights issues higher on the EU agenda.

The conference was attended by more than 200 people, representing business, civil society organisations, labour market organisations, member states, EU institutions and international organisations.

The government on Monday has launched a project with the view to ensure traffic safety.

An action plan on police traffic enforcement and traffic safety aims to improve people's sense of security and the safety of people, the environment and property, said an official press release.

The action plan will guide and direct the activities of the police, and it will take into account the changes that have occurred in traffic and traffic safety and the impacts of these changes.

The long-term vision for traffic safety is to have zero traffic fatalities or serious injuries.

In 2016, fatalities and serious accidents incurred costs of EUR 1,370 million, so the financial impacts of achieving the goal would also be significant.

In accordance with the government Programme of Prime Minister Antti Rinne, improvement of traffic safety will again be included in the development of the transport system and services.

The aim is to meet the Vision Zero targets of the European Union (to reduce road deaths to zero by 2050).

The project will be prepared as part of official duties at the Ministry of the Interior in cooperation with the police. The steering group of the project includes representatives from the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the National Police Board, the Transport and Communications Agency, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, the Finnish Crash Data Institute, and the Finnish Road Safety Council. Experts and other stakeholders can be consulted during the preparation process.

The project runs from 2 December 2019 to 30 June 2020.
