A 30-year-old man appeared in court on Saturday charged with having deliberately started a fire in an apartment which led to his 70-year-old mother being admitted to intensive care with serious burns.
The man was arrested on Friday after police investigations into the fire pointed towards it having been started deliberately.
In court on Saturday, he was remanded in custody for three days.
His mother had suffered burns to her airway and second-degree burns to her back. She was intubated at the Nicosia general hospital.
The man, who lives in the apartment with her, suffered a superficial burn to his leg and was discharged after being examined by doctors.
The pair had initially been trapped on the balcony before being rescued by the fire brigade.
The police’s investigation into the matter is ongoing.
