Brussels police are warning of a scam involving fake QR stickers affixed to parking meters.

“This sticker leads people to a fraudulent website where all kinds of personal and bank details are requested,” the police said.

Police suggest that people inspect any suspicious QR code on parking meters.

“After scanning the QR code, it’s best to always check the URL of the website you were directed to. Be sure to check if it matches the official web address.

"Also, use official platforms like Apple Store or Google Play for downloading applications. If you notice anything unusual or suspicious, do not take any chances. Avoid sharing your personal or banking details after scanning a QR code."

Those who think they might have been victims of fraud or have shared their details on a suspicious website are advised to contact their bank as soon as possible.

“Get your accounts blocked and check your banking transactions to notice any suspicious activity,” the police added.

“If in doubt, ask for a complete analysis of your phone to detect any spyware. Don’t hesitate to complain to your local police station.”

Those who notice a questionable QR code can also file a report at suspect@safeonweb.be.

Authorities said that these attempts at quishing (phishing using QR codes) are increasingly common.

In late October, suspicious QR codes were also noticed in Bruges, where a fake QR code was stuck on at least 17 cash machines.

This led to a phishing website where users had to enter their bank card details. The attempted scam was quickly detected, according to city authorities.

Officers are keeping an eye out for the fraudulent stickers and removing them where found.
