From midnight on 31 December to 5.30 on 1 January, Stib is offering a free and beefed-up service for passengers, the Brussels public transport operator has announced.
To meet the demand of New Year revellers, tram, metro and 7 bus lines will run until 2.30 in the morning at increased frequencies. The Noctis buses and tram 81 will also remain in service until 5.00.
This year, the city’s traditional midnight firework display is being staged in front of the Atomium at Boulevard du Centenaire, in Heysel. Spectators can enjoy the event without worrying about getting home, said Stib.
In total, some 650 members of its workforce will be on duty, from drivers and dispatchers to station staff.
Expanded service and increased frequency
On New Year's eve, all metros and trams as well as buses 45, 49, 50, 54, 56, 65 and 87 are scheduled to operate until 2.30.
Passengers taking the last metro from the Roi Baudouin station on line 6 will be able to transfer to the last metros on lines 1 and 5 at Beekkant. The frequency will be increased on all four metro lines and nine tram lines (4, 7, 10, 39, 44, 51, 55, 81 and 93).
For city-centre partygoers, the Noctis night buses will run between midnight and 5.30, with final departures from the centre at 5.00. Passengers will benefit from a service every 10 minutes on line N18, every 15 minutes on lines N04, N05, N06, N08, N09, N10 and N11 and every 20 minutes on lines N12, N13 and N16.
Finally, tram line 81 will also run throughout the night, at a frequency of one tram every 15 minutes.
Closure of some services ahead of firework display
Some interruptions to public transport services are expected due to the closure of Avenue Impératrice Charlotte, Place de Belgique and Avenue de Miramar on the evening of 31 December.
Trams 7 and 35 as well as buses 83 and N18 will be diverted from 20.00. Some station closures will also occur, depending on requests from city police.
In 2023, almost 125,000 people travelled on the Stib network on New Year's eve.
