Police officers seized 2,989 packets of imported and untaxed cigarettes in a targeted raid in Schaerbeek on 3 October.
The Brussels public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation following the operation carried out by North police zone - Schaerbeek, Evere, Saint-Josse-ten-Noode.
The three shops were all located near Place de la Reine in Schaerbeek and belonged to the same company.
In one shop, the police discovered 121 packets of imported cigarettes. A red-handed search was then carried out at the home of the manager and in a shop closed to the public. In the back room of the latter, the officers found several thousand packets of contraband cigarettes.
In total, 2,989 packets of 20 cigarettes were seized and handed over to the customs and excise department of the Federal Finance Public Service. The three establishments searched were administratively closed.
