Telecom operator Proximus is implementing extra security measures for its shops in Brussels and elsewhere following a series of robberies and burglaries in recent weeks.

The measures include the decision to stop displaying expensive devices, such as iPhone models, in its shops until further notice.

“While around 10 incidents were recorded last year, that figure has more than doubled in recent months, with around 10 robberies or burglaries in the month of June alone,” spokesperson Fabrice Gansbeke told Belga.

“Since last weekend, security guards have also been deployed in front of the shops and additional security measures are being taken.”

The incidents occurred mainly in Wallonia - in Namur, Hainaut and Walloon Brabant - but also in Brussels.

Because the incidents took place both at night and during the day, the safety of customers and employees was at risk, Proximus said, adding that it has provided psychosocial support for employees and customers who witnessed or were victims of robberies.

A shop in Waterloo was recently robbed twice in the space of two days. The case is under investigation.

Customers can still get demonstrations and advice on their smartphones, but purchases of expensive products will always be delivered to their homes within the shortest possible deadlines, rather than being sold on site.

The resumption of "normal" activities will depend on the evolution of the situation, Proximus said.
