PHOTOS: Hungarian government helped building church near Amman, Jordan

The second regional representative office of the Hungary Helps aid agency has opened in Amman, Tristan Azbej, the state secretary in charge of assistance to persecuted Christian communities, said in the Jordanian capital on Friday. He also attended as guest of honour the dedication of a church built in cooperation of the Jordanian and Hungarian governments near Amman.

The office’s mission will be to aid local Christians and other communities in crisis, Tristan Azbej, the state secretary in charge of assistance to persecuted Christian communities, told MTI by phone, noting that the first such office had been opened in Chad.

The office will also be tasked to oversee the targeted delivery and use of material and financial donations “representing the solidarity and interests of Hungarian people,” Azbej said.

“And this way the Hungarian government’s objective that people in trouble should choose to stay at home intsead of migration will be achieved,” he said.

The state secretary noted that the government’s Hungary Helps scheme had been launched in 2017, providing humanitarian aid to the religious Yazidi minority persecuted by the Islamic State terrorist organisation.

Hungarian government gave 700,000 euros for a new church near Amman

Azbej said that earlier in the day he had met and discussed the situation in the Middle East with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State and Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.

He said that after the talks he attended as guest of honour the dedication of a church built in cooperation of the Jordanian and Hungarian governments near Amman. Hungary has contributed 700,000 euros, Azbej added.

The state secretary said that as a representative of Hungary, he received the Latin Patriarchate’s highest award to thank the Hungarian people for their financial help.

State Secretary Pizzaballa thanked Hungary for the help it granted through the church to Christians in the Gaza region and to the Lebanese people, said Azbej.
