Ireland weather: Massive 14C temperature swing as snow still falls but warnings to come to an end

Ireland is waking up to a wide variety of conditions this morning as some areas still feel the effects of the big freeze and others experience significantly higher temperatures than in recent days.

There is a huge 14C temperature swing across the country, with some parts of the Midlands falling to as low as -7C early this morning, while some areas in the south hit highs of 7C at the same time.

It comes as milder air moves in following the cold snap, bringing with it showery conditions and drizzle into the weekend. Though fresh snowfall has already been reported in the likes of Limerick and Tipperary this morning.

While a Met Eireann Status Orange low temperature/ice warning remains in place for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Galway, Leitrim, Roscommon and Tipperary until 8am and a nationwide Status Yellow low temperature/ice warning is valid until midday, a major thaw is expected to get underway this afternoon as the country recovers from Arctic conditions.

A spokesperson for Met Eireann said: "Very cold across most of the country this morning, with widespread frost and ice or black ice. Cloud and rain in the southwest will slowly move northeast through the day, turning to sleet for a time with snow on high ground. It will stay dry in Ulster and north Leinster. Highest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees generally but not as cold in the southwest with moderate to fresh east to southeast winds developing.

"A cloudy night with outbreaks of rain spreading further northeastwards, turning to sleet or snow on high ground. Not as cold as previous nights with lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees in light to moderate southeast winds, fresh in the west and northwest.

"Tomorrow will be generally cloudy with scattered outbreaks of light rain and drizzle. Scattered showers will spread across the south and southwest during the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees, milder near south and west coasts, in light to moderate southerly winds."
