Producers from Tokaj and Eger Triumph at Prestigious Wine Grand Prix

In the white wine category, the 2021 Csontos furmint from Bott Winery in Tokaj, and in the red wine category, the 2019 Agapé Nagy-Eged-hegy grand superior Egri Bikavér (‘Bull’s Blood’) from St. Andrea Vineyard and Winery in Eger (northern Hungary) won the 2024 Hungarian Wine Grand Prix. The winner of the Dr. József Kosárka Memorial Award is the Kovács Nimród Winery, also from Eger.

The top list of the Hungarian Wine Writers’ Circle (MBK) includes 12 white and 12 red wines every year, and the members of the MBK award the Hungarian Wine Grand Prix in white and red categories after blind tasting.

This year, the judges selected the most wines from the Pannon wine region (Villány, Szekszárd, Tolna, and Pécs) and the Balaton wine region (six wine regions around Lake Balaton), six from each region. The Upper Pannonian wine region (Sopron, Mór, Etyek, Neszmély, and Pannonhalma) followed with five wines, then Tokaj with four. The Upper Hungary wine region (Eger, Mátra, and Bükk) was represented with three wines, the Hungarian Wine Writers’ Association told MTI on Wednesday.

The statement recalls that József Kosárka was the founder and president of the MBK until his death in 2022.

The award in his memory was chosen by the MBK members from among the wineries that received the most nominations this year, and the 2024 Memorial Award thus went to Kovács Nimród Winery from Eger.

This is the third time that a winery from Eger has been awarded the prize, after Thummerer Winery in 2022, and St. Andrea Vineyard and Winery in 2023.

The award ceremony will be held at the Mercure Hotel in Székesfehérvár on Saturday. The two Hungarian Grand Prix-winner wines can be tasted by the public at a masterclass during the event, where Judit Bott (Bott Winery) and György Lőrincz (St. Andrea Vineyard and Winery) will present their wines in person.
