Death of Ukrainian from stabbing ruled as suicide vindicating spouse
A 63-year-old Ukranian woman who had been remanded in custody on suspicion of having stabbed her husband to death with a kitchen knife is free on Thursday as investigators concluded that the man’s death had been self-inflicted.
Police had not ruled out premeditated murder in their investigation of the case which came to their attention on December 27, after the woman called an ambulance to their Limassol residence where 62-year-old Ukrainian national Vitaly Shostak was found dead with a single stab would to his chest.
According to reports on Thursday, Shostak’s death was conclusively determined to have been a suicide, after DNA testing and forensic findings from medical examiner Nikolas Charalambous and corroborating evidence, such as the fact that no defensive wounds were present on either member of the couple, nor was there any physical evidence of a scuffle at the apartment.
The outcome vindicated the 63-year-old woman who from the start had maintained she was innocent and she was released overnight on Wednesday.
