Wayne Rooney advised to take most controversial job yet following Plymouth sacking
Wayne Rooney has been urged work under Pep Guardiola in order to get his managerial career back on track.
The Manchester United legend, who is the club's all-time top scorer, is out of work after being dismissed by Championship side Plymouth Argyle following a wretched run of results.
Reports have already emerged suggesting that Rooney could be primed for a return to punditry, but the England legend has been told to stick with coaching and secure a controversial move to Manchester City.

EFL pundit Don Goodman has suggested that studying Guardiola’s methods could help Rooney get his own career back on track.
Speaking to Plejmo.com, he said: "I remember him joking about going to Manchester City and learning from Pep Guardiola previously. It sounds funny but it wouldn't be the worst idea, would it when you look at what Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca learned?!
"Obviously, that’s probably a non-starter but Coleen's been in the jungle so they might want to take some family time. He was an excellent as a pundit in the summer at the Euro’s and I’d imagine people would like to see him do it again. My best guess though, is that he'd like to get back in football in a ‘hands-on’ capacity.”
Rooney has already spoken out on a controversial move to the Etihad. Asked on the Stick to the Football podcast whether he would work for City, he replied: “It depends (on whether I’d ever be an assistant) – if Pep Guardiola comes in and asks me to be his assistant, you’d walk there.
“You see what (Mikel) Arteta is doing now (at Arsenal) and I strongly believe a lot of that is from learning what Guardiola was doing, and so it depends on what the situation is.
“For me, the best manager is Pep and you look at how he adapts – how they (City) are playing now is not the same as how they were playing four years ago.
“He keeps making these subtle changes and then you see everyone else trying to do the same. They also work harder than anyone else.”
City could certainly do with some more help after what has been a disappointing season so far. Guardiola’s side sit sixth and already 12 points behind leaders Liverpool.
They have however shown some promising signs over recent weeks with back-to-back victories against Leicester and West Ham. Before that, they had lost nine games in 13 matches in all competitions in what was an awful run. They take on Salford City in the FA Cup third round this weekend.
