Deaths down 25% with new highway code says Salvini

Italian road deaths have fallen 25%
since the introduction of a new highway code on December 14,
Transport Minister Matteo Salvini said Sunday.

"In the first 15 days of the new code, deaths decreased by 25%,
going from 67 on 14-18 December 2023 to 50 in the same period
this year", said Salvini, who is also deputy premier, in a live
broadcast on his social media channels.

The rightwing League leader then indicated that in the first 13
days, accidents decreased by 3%, those with injuries by 8%,
those with injuries by 10%, those with deaths by 17%.

Salvini commented: "it's worth it, it means doing good, it means
doing good politics'.

The new code stiffens penalties for drink and drug driving and
