2 mn fewer employed people under 35 in 20 years - CNEL

The National Council on the Economy
and Labour (CNEL) government think tank on Friday published a
report saying Italy had two million fewer people in employment
under the age of 35 over the last 25 years.

Demographic trends weigh on the labor market with a sharp
reduction in employed people under 35 and a doubling of those
between 50 and 64 between 2004 and 2024, said the CNEL in its
"Demography and workforce" report.

People in work between 15 and 34 have gone from 7.6 million in
the third quarter of 2004 to 5.4 million in the third quarter of
2024 with a drop of over two million units while in the same
period employed people between 50 and 64 have gone from 4.5
million to over 8.9.

There was also a significant drop in employed people aged 35 to
49 (from 9.8 million to 8.8).
