Tragic takeaway delivery driver who died when car plunged into Grand Canal named as tributes paid
This is the tragic delivery driver who died when his car plunged into the Grand Canal in Co Kildare.Jason ‘Jay’ Hallahan, who was in his 40s and from Prosperous in Co Kildare, died when it is believed his car skidded as he reversed from a mobile home property on the banks of the canal at Grangeclare West, Kilmeague at around 8pm on Sunday. Mr Hallahan, who worked as a takeaway delivery driver, had just left off a delivery when the tragedy occurred.
It is understood horrified locals saw the car going into the canal and immediately made efforts to try and save the man - but to no avail. Sources say gardai are now investigating the incident as a horrific accident.
Tributes have since poured out for Jay on social media - with a relative posting: “Rip Jay thank u for always being the best big cousin to me and always loving and protecting me I will miss and love u now and forever.

I love u Jay sleep tight.” Pal Gavin Mullally added: “Words will never describe how I feel , yesterday morning we were planning going out new years night but life had other plans for us.
"You always felt like a brother I never had and when I had the shitty days u we’re always a call or text away , everything u did for me on the wedding day I could never repay you . “F*ck man my heart is broke , I’ll see you in another life my friend and we will have round two of golf and a Guinness after, love you bud.”Jay’s death notice has also been posted onto RIP.ie - noting friends and family will hold a celebration of his life on Monday December 30 in Newlands Cross Crematorium at 2:30pm. The notice said Jason, of Prosperous, Co. Kildare and late of Cherrywood, Clondalkin died “tragically, following an accident,” and is “deeply regretted by his loving daughter Evelyn, partner Sharon, mother Patricia, father Seamus, uncles, aunts, cousins and a large circle of friends.”
The vehicle has since been removed from the water by authorities. Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, local councillor Brendan Wyse said the news was tragic, especially in the lead up to Christmas. “It’s obviously going to be a tragedy for some family and so close to Christmas too,” he said.
