Wied Inċita open to the public: a 20,000-square-metre green space restored

Wied Inċita, a 20,000 square-metre green space in the heart of the country, is now open for public enjoyment following months of restoration work by Ambjent Malta. This initiative transformed the area into a family-friendly destination and marks the first phase of a larger space planned to open to the public.

The project, inaugurated by Minister for the Environment Miriam Dalli, has transformed a previously inaccessible site into a natural park for public use.

The land, which was originally allocated to a consortium in 2002 for landscaping purposes, has now been regenerated and returned to the public through an agreement with the new consortium, GEB.

Minister Miriam Dalli highlighted that the opening of Wied Inċita fulfills another promise. "In October, we pledged to provide 40,000 square metres of open spaces by the end of this year, and we delivered. Wied Inċita, along with Spencer Gardens, Hospice Gardens, Independence Gardens, and the gardens at Villa Portelli, are now available for public enjoyment," said Minister Dalli. She also announced plans for 19 more projects in the coming year to ensure more families and young people have access to parks and gardens close to their homes. "Work has already started in Pembroke, where a concrete area is being transformed into a garden, and similarly in Santa Luċija, where an abandoned plot is being turned into another open space," she added.

Minister Dalli emphasised the importance of maintaining these spaces. "We are creating new spaces and regenerating existing ones, while also focusing on the long-term upkeep. With modern irrigation systems, sustainable materials, and investments in maintenance, these projects are designed to be enjoyed by families and young people for years to come," she said.

The Wied Inċita park offers stunning views and has been made safer and more accessible for the community. A total of 750 trees and hundreds of shrubs have been planted, supported by a modern irrigation system to ensure adequate watering, even during the summer heat.

The works also included the removal of 370 tonnes of waste and other materials, restoration of rubble walls, installation of picnic benches, and two gazebos. The main pathways have been reconstructed to ensure safety and allow for rainwater drainage, with grass growing naturally around them.

As part of the inauguration, children from the Attard school participated by planting several trees at Wied Inċita.
