Everyone's putting Christmas tree in wrong place - as expert shares secret to perfect location

Christmas decorations seem to pop up earlier each year, with some Irish households diving into the festive spirit weeks - or even months - before December 25 arrives. But with the big day now less than a month away, the rest of us are starting to think about when to start decking out our homes.

For many, the Christmas tree is the star of the show. While some people meticulously plan the placement of baubles, lights and tinsel, the placement of the tree itself is often overlooked. According to experts, this is where we might be going wrong.

It turns out many of us have been unknowingly placing our trees in the wrong spot, which could affect both the aesthetic and practical elements of our home during the festive season.

It's very common across Ireland to see trees proudly displayed in front of windows, but Emily Simmons, creative director at Ruggable, says this should be avoided.

She explained: "With many people preparing to put their Christmas decorations up, a bay window will likely be the desired place for their Christmas tree. However, although a real Christmas tree does need sunlight, too much direct sunlight can dry the tree out and block natural light coming into your room when placed directly in front of the window, which can make your room darker and colder."

To maximise your indoor space this festive season, Emily has offered up some alternative spots for your tree that won't block out as much light.

She suggested: "I would always suggest placing your real Christmas tree to the side of the window or nearer a window that isn't a south-facing one. This way, your tree will still get the light it needs, without giving it too much direct sunlight. The natural light will be able to dazzle your tree decor as well, adding to the festive feeling in your home!"

Meanwhile, for those wondering what date they should put their decorations up, experts at Christmas Tree World say that it should be done on the first day of Advent - which is today, Sunday, December 1. According to the pros, putting it up any earlier can be "bad luck".
