Man, 30s, charged in connection with fatal hit-and-run in Limerick

A man aged in his 30s has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run collision in Limerick city on Tuesday, in which a pedestrian in his 50s was fatally injured and later died in hospital.

The individual had been arrested yesterday and was detained at a Garda station in the southern region. He has now been charged and is due to appear before Limerick District Court on Thursday morning.

The victim of the collision has been named locally as James Forde from Shannamore Park in Clareview. He was allegedly struck by a maroon Ford Focus on the Ennis Road in Limerick shortly before 2pm on Tuesday.

The vehicle allegedly failed to remain at the scene of the collision, which occurred on a section of the busy road beside JFK junior school and Our Lady of the Rosary Church.

It is understood that the car involved in the incident has been recovered.

Mr Forde, who was aged in his 50s, died at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) on Tuesday. He is survived by his mother Anne, nine siblings, and a large extended family.

In a notice published on RIP.ie, his family paid tribute to the first responders, gardaí, and staff at UHL for their dedicated care.
