Fewer couples with children, more single-parent families

Italy is seeing fewer couples with
children, and more single-parent families, Istat said Tuesday.

Over the 10 years from 2011 to 2021, the stats agency said,
couples with children have decreased by over 1.2 million, with a
downward trend even stronger than at the beginning of the new
millennium.

Couples without children living together are also decreasing
(-3% compared to 2011) and single-parent households are
increasing, going from around 2.65 million in 2011 to more than
3.8 million in 2021 (+44%).

Single mothers in 2021 are 2,967,420, showing an increase of
35.5% compared to the 2011 census, while the number of single
fathers is 855,049 with a variation of approximately 85%
(462,626 in 2011).
