Limerick sporting grounds underwater as Storm Bert causes widespread flooding

Two sports pitches in Abbeyfeale, Limerick, are underwater after Storm Bert caused a river to burst its banks.

The west Limerick town was among the worst hit in the country as heavy flooding caused havoc this weekend.

When River Feale burst its banks along the Limerick-Kerry border, it caused widespread flooding in Abbeyfeale.

Two of the town's sporting grounds, Abbeyfeale Utd and Fr Caseys GAA, are underwater after the storm hit Friday night.

Minister Patrick O'Donovan told Live95 News: "A gigantic volume of water has come through the town, through both rivers. There is a tirade of water flowing under the bridge and onto Father Casey's playing field.

"Supports will be given out to the Department of Social Protection. That's automatic.

"I've also spoken to the CEO of Limerick City and County Council, Pat Daly, who can access the supports from the Department of Social Protection for people in Abbeyfeale and elsewhere as well that may have been impacted."
