Prime Minister Convenes Defense Council Meeting over Ukraine Crisis

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán convened a meeting of the Defense Council on Wednesday in view of the latest developments in the war in Ukraine and the increased threat of an escalation of the conflict, Bertalan Havasi, the Prime Minister’s press chief, informed MTI.

Held in the Carmelite monastery in Budapest, the meeting was attended by the Prime Minister, the heads and state secretaries of the relevant ministries, the PM’s national security advisor, and the commander of the Hungarian Armed Forces. According to the press chief, they reviewed the war situation after Washington authorized in-depth attacks on Russian soil with weapons delivered by the United States. The Defense Council meeting also assessed the Russian decision to extend the list of military threats that Moscow will potentially respond to with nuclear weapons.

In a video posted on social media on Wednesday afternoon after the meeting, the Prime Minister said

he had listened to the Defense Council’s report and concluded that “never before has the risk of escalation, of the spread of war, been so high.”

Mr. Orbán said that “we are facing the most dangerous two months of war. With the victory of U.S. President Donald Trump, peace, or at least a ceasefire, is within reach, but for two months the pro-war government is still in power in the United States.”

What this means in practice is that on Tuesday, the Ukrainians fired long-range missiles into Russian territory and the Russians adopted a tougher nuclear doctrine in response,”

he explained. The Prime Minister stressed that in the coming weeks and months, Hungary will need “all its knowledge, all its tools, all its diplomatic experience to remain out of this war.”
