Govt to approve decree to fix Albania migrant centres issue

Premier Giorgia Meloni's cabinet is
set to approve a decree later on Monday aimed as solving the
legal issue that led a Rome court to refuse to validate the
detention of 12 migrants at a newly opened Italian-run centre in
Gjader, Albania.

   
The court gave the thumbs down to first group of migrants being
held at one of the centres Italy has set up on Albanian
territory in the basis of a controversial agreement with Tirana
on the grounds that their countries of provenance, Bangladesh
and Egypt, could not be considered safe.

   
Government sources have said the decree will set a list of safe
countries.

   
On Friday, Meloni said it was up to the government to define
what is a safe country in terms of migration.

   
The Rome court's decision sparked an angry reaction from leading
cabinet members, with Deputy Premier and Transport Minister
Matteo Salvini accusing judges of being "politicised".
